UV vs LED Nail Lamp: Which Do You Need and What Does It Cost?

Gel only cures under a lamp. Compare UV vs LED nail lamps, what each costs, and which to buy for at-home gel.

Gel polish does not air-dry - it only hardens (cures) under a lamp. So a lamp is not optional for at-home gel; it is the anchor of any starter kit, and the single piece that most affects your results.

UV vs LED: what is the difference?

Older UV lamps cure most gels but more slowly, and the bulbs dim over time and need replacing. LED lamps cure compatible gels much faster (often in 30–60 seconds) and the diodes last for years. Most modern lamps are dual UV/LED, which is the safest choice for curing a range of polishes.

What does a lamp cost?

Standalone LED/UV lamps typically run $20–$60. In a ~$80 starter kit the lamp is bundled with base coat, top coat, color, and tools, so you are not paying for it twice. If you already own polishes, a standalone lamp is the cheapest way to start curing at home.

Which should you buy?

For at-home gel, a dual UV/LED lamp is the practical default: it cures the widest range of polishes, cures fast, and lasts. Check that any polish you buy lists your lamp's type and wattage as compatible so it cures fully and lasts the full 2–3 weeks.
